In your browser

The site includes no advertising scripts. Fonts, styles, scripts, search indexes and ranking data are served from this site’s own origin. It keeps the journal IDs you add to the compare list in localStorage, under the key ojr.cart.v1, so the list survives between pages; they stay in your browser until you clear them or remove the journals. The one third-party service is Google Analytics, described below: depending on where you are, it waits for your consent or runs until you turn it off. While it is off, the site sets no cookies and loading a page makes no third-party requests.

Search suggestions look up downloaded index files in your browser. Opening a search results page puts the query in its URL, so that query is sent to our hosting service as part of the page request. Filters and charts run in the browser without sending analytics events.

The compare page requests a data file for each journal in your list, so those journal IDs reach our hosting service in the same way as visits to the journal pages. A compare link you copy or share contains the same IDs in its URL.

Google Analytics

Whether Google Analytics runs before you choose depends on where you are. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Switzerland, Quebec and Brazil, and wherever your location cannot be determined, a banner asks first: nothing is sent to Google before you choose Allow analytics, and if you decline or do not answer, the Google Analytics script is never loaded. Elsewhere Google Analytics is on from your first page view; a notice says so until you dismiss it, and you can turn it off there or at any time under Cookie settings.

To tell which rule applies, a page asks this site’s server when you have made no choice. Our hosting service, Cloudflare, derives your country, and in Canada your province, from your IP address; the server answers with the rule alone, without your location, and the answer is not stored or cached.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, Google Analytics stays off wherever you are, even if you accepted it earlier, and the site does not ask.

While Google Analytics is on, your browser loads Google’s gtag.js script from www.googletagmanager.com and sends Google Analytics 4 a page view for each page you open, with the page address and title, the address of the page you came from, and browser, device, screen size and language details. Google Analytics also records engagement it measures on its own, such as time on the page, how far you scroll and links you follow to other sites. We use the reports to see which pages are used. Google signals and ad personalization are turned off, and consent for advertising storage and ad data stays denied.

Search text is removed first: the q parameter, which holds your query, is stripped from the page address and the previous page’s address before they are sent, so Google does not receive what you searched for.

While it is on, Google Analytics sets two first-party cookies on this site: _ga, a random identifier for your browser, and _ga_JBGT6GTJK7, which keeps session state. Both last up to two years from your last visit, because each page view renews them. Your choice, Allow analytics or Decline analytics (Turn off in the notice), is kept in this browser’s localStorage under ojr_analytics_consent so the site does not ask again, and dismissing the notice is kept under ojr_analytics_notice so it does not return; neither is sent anywhere.

Google receives your IP address when your browser loads the script and sends page views, as with any web request. Google states that Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses, and that it uses them to derive approximate location, such as country and city, for reports.

To change your choice, use Cookie settings at the foot of any page or the button below. A choice you make applies wherever you are later. Declining or turning it off stops page views from then on and deletes the _ga cookies on this site. A Decline is kept for 6 months, with its date stored as ojr_analytics_declined_at; after that the banner asks again, and Google Analytics stays off until you answer. Clearing this site’s data in your browser also removes the stored choice: the banner then asks again, or, where Google Analytics is on by default, it runs again and the notice returns.

Hosting and request logs

Cloudflare serves this site and processes incoming requests. Worker observability is enabled, so requests handled by the Worker produce operational logs. Request information can include the requested URL, time and network or browser metadata. Search queries in URLs may therefore be visible to the hosting service. The site code does not create a separate visitor database or configure a log-retention period.

Links and contact

External links, such as OpenAlex, contact those services when you follow them. Their own handling of that visit applies. Contacting the maintainer by email uses your email provider.
